Milan Chester Davig

Milan Chester Davig, 94, died peacefully in his sleep in Waconia, MN on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am January 10, 2026, at St. Stephen Lutheran church, 8400 France Ave S, Edina MN: Visitation 10 am; Special Music and Sing-Along 10:30 am; with a lunch following the service.

Milan Chester Davig, son of Martin and Stella (Christenson) Davig, was born October 8, 1931. His birth was such a shock to him that he lost the capacity for speech for two years and, when it came back, it returned in Norsk! Milan’s three older siblings, Gerda, Christen, and Elling, were already in school when his youngest brother, Paul, was born and so it was that Milan was sent off to country school as well, at the age of 4, having to learn a new language. The transitional language for him was “Kickapoo English.” Subsequently, he became a proud graduate of Pine Knob School District #14. The graduation exercise was generally short as there were only 3 graduates. His dad’s stroke during Milan’s sophomore year of high school was life-changing and demanded he grow up and start doing a man’s work on the family farm at a young age.

Upon graduation from Soldiers Grove High School in 1948, he began studies at Luther College, Decorah IA in the fall. After his freshman year, he took a leave of absence for a year to return to the farm while his brother Elling returned to Luther for his second year. After Milan returned to complete his education at Luther, he received his baccalaureate diploma in 1953. Milan never stopped being grateful for his parental home, the basic values of life that he learned from his parents, and the gift of a sister and brothers and their bond of love and support.

The next fall, he entered Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. In the spring of his first year, Joan Susanne Russeth entered his life, and the relationship began at a Boston Pops concert. Milan interned at Grace Lutheran in Fairmont, MN, where he sold his sky-blue Rocket 88 Oldsmobile to buy a diamond for the hand of the love of his life. After finishing his internship, Joan and Milan were married on August 31, 1956, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.

In the spring of 1957, he received a call to serve his first parish in rural Pelican Rapids—North Immanuel and Grove Lake Lutheran Churches. On the day Milan was to graduate from seminary, he and Joan became parents, with the birth of Martin John. Milan baptized their son at his ordination service at Kickapoo United Lutheran Church near Soldiers Grove, WI (the church built by his grandfather, Jørgen Gerhard Antonson Davig, and the congregation where Milan was baptized and confirmed) and the young family moved to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Daughter Ellen Susanne was born in this community which treated them with gentleness and kindness in their expectations and encouragement. In 1962, they received the call to serve Hawley Lutheran, where again they were also to develop deep and lasting lifetime friendships. In the following January (1963), their second son, James Peter, was born. In 1967, with a call to Faith Lutheran in Bagley, the family moved to the north woods of Minnesota. Opportunities for ministry together with Ojibwe people and adults with disabilities added a new dimension to their lives. Again, the family grew as they welcomed the birth of Sara Lynn in 1974.

After fifteen years in Bagley, roots ran deep and it was, as before, hard to leave when an exciting new opportunity for ministry called Milan to serve as Assistant to the Bishop of the Northern MN District of the American Lutheran Church. Following the merger which produced the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Milan received a call to serve as pastor at American Lutheran, Windom, MN where, again, they were overwhelmed with the hospitality of the congregation. In 1991, Gethsemane Lutheran in Dassel called them and Milan, Joan, and Sara were embraced again by kindness in their new home. Their “at home” family grew to four during this time when their foreign exchange student, Fumiko, joined them in Dassel. In 1994, Good Shepherd Lutheran in Moorhead called Milan to serve as Interim Senior Pastor where he served until he was called to serve on synod staff for Northwest Minnesota Synod of the ELCA. Following this, Milan intended to retire but ended up serving as a volunteer in the Joint Rural Life Commission of the ELCA with the Crookston Diocese which overlapped with serving as part-time pastor at First Lutheran in Akeley, which he did for four years. Subsequent to that, Milan served one year part-time as pastor at the UCC church at Walker, MN.

When you are a Norwegian, getting on in years (and with the high price of lutefisk), it is really hard to stop working. And so, the years since were marked by supply preaching, leading classes and seminars and discussion groups, and looking for his glasses. Finally, he realized there were more rewards in indulging in being a grandparent and great grandparent than what work and money could bring. Life has been so full of delights brought not only by their children and their wonderful spouses, but also by grandchildren and great grandchildren. The addition of in-laws and step grandchildren has been an added blessing.

Milan wishes to express his deep thankfulness to family and friends for the love and care he has received and to all those, through the years, who pushed him to see Jesus and the world and the expansiveness of God in new ways.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Stella (Christenson) Davig; sister and brother-in-law, Gerda (Davig) and Marlyn Hansing, brother and sister-in-law, Christen and Lorraine (Knutson) Davig, brother and sister-in-law Paul and Shirley (Simpson) Davig; godparents Rachel Geneva Tainter Helgeson and Gladys R Christenson Sherry; and a marvelous cloud of witnesses.

Milan is survived by his wife, Joan Susanne (Russeth) Davig, his brother Elling and sister-in-law Joan (Smith) Davig; son Martin John Davig, spouse Bonnie, and their children and grandchildren: Nicole (Bob) Bommelyn and Mya, Ava, and Devin, and Michelle Kelly and Kadence and Bennett, and Danielle (Josh) Kahn and Stiles, and Alexander John Davig, and Sophia Mary Davig; daughter Ellen Susanne (Davig) Holstein and her children and grandchildren: Anders Davig Dovre (Jen) and Nelle Susanne and Nora Lynn; Nels Davig Dovre (Allison); son James Peter Davig and his children Grace Susanne, Peter Aaland, Henry Christen Iver; daughter Sara Lynn (Davig) Atkinson, spouse Daniel, and their children Aiden Dawson, Stella Mae, Liam Davig, and Britta Kay; godchildren: Kirsten (Davig) Benidt, Jon Kuss, Christine Nedrud, Sharon Boyd; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials to ELCA World Hunger or Global Refuge (formerly LIRS) or givers choice.

Milan donated his body to medical research at the University of Minnesota; internment of ashes will be at a later date in Kickapoo United Cemetery, Soldiers Grove, WI.

Joanne (O’Shea) Whalen

Joanne Whalen, 76, passed away on December 15, 2025, just four short months after losing her beloved husband, Bill. Her children find comfort in knowing they are now reunited.

Joanne was born on August 21, 1949, in Heidelberg, Germany to John and Francis O’Shea, but she spent her childhood in Bagley, MN.  After graduating from Bagley High School, Joanne enrolled at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Duluth, MN where she earned her Registered Nursing Degree.  While attending school, Joanne met Bill, the great love of her life.  After marrying on June 11, 1971, they made Eau Claire, WI their lifelong home, raising their family there.  Joanne dedicated her life to caring for others, whether in her career as a registered nurse or as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  Joanne is survived by her children, Jennifer (Joe) and Ryan (Kari); and grandchildren, Riley, Laney and Preston.  She leaves behind her sister Maureen and brother Mike, along with her sister-in-law Claudia, and many other loving family members and friends.  Joanne was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Joanne’s life centered around her family.  She found her greatest happiness in being a wife, mother, and Nana, taking immense pride in creating a warm and loving home for them all.  She especially cherished bringing her family together for special events and celebrations.  Joanne loved babies and being a Nana was her proudest role.  She delighted in showering her grandchildren with attention and affection-always making sure she had their favorite treats on hand. At Nana’s house the grandkids quickly learned that Mom and Dad’s rules didn’t apply, an ice cream float was a must, at any time of the day and the candy jar had an endless supply of M&Ms.  Joanne proudly talked about them to anyone who would listen, took great interest in their lives and activities, and was undeniably their biggest supporter.

Together, Joanne and Bill enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. Sunday drives in the fall to admire the changing leaves were a cherished tradition. A hot cup of coffee shared with Bill, along with good conversation, was one of life’s simple pleasures that she loved and missed greatly in the months following his passing. She also truly enjoyed getting together with friends and catching up with them on the phone.  Joanne valued all of these experiences, never taking a single moment, big or small, for granted.

Joanne will be deeply missed by all those whose lives were touched by her compassion and grace. Despite living her entire life with kidney disease, she never let the illness define her; she was a fighter through and through and did not let it stop her from living a full life.  A special thank you to her sister-in-law, Claudia, for donating a kidney to Joanne and giving her many extra years before starting dialysis.  Also, thank you to the London Road Dialysis Team, the staff at Dove Healthcare and St. Croix Hospice for their care and support.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 1:30 pm at Hulke Family Funeral Home with Pastor Debra Boynton officiating.   Visitation will take place that day at the funeral home from 12:15 pm until the time of service.  Private family committal service will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire.

Friends and family may offer condolences online at www.hulkefamilyfh.com. Hulke Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 3209 Rudolph Road, Eau Claire, WI 54701 is assisting the family with the arrangements.

January 1, 1939 ~ November 10, 2025

Aileen Erickson

Aileen Erickson, 86, of Leonard, Minnesota, went peacefully with her Lord and Savior on Monday, November 10, 2025, at home with her family by her side.

Services will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Clearbrook, Minnesota, with Pastor Randy Reimer officiating. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. with the service following at noon.  Interment will be held at the Clover Township Cemetery in Leonard, Minnesota.  A lunch will begin at 1:00 pm immediately following the service, and burial will take place following.

Aileen Eleanor (Swanson) Erickson, daughter of Thomas and Petra (Haugen) Swanson, was born at home on her mother’s birthday, January 1, 1939, in Clover Township, Minnesota.  She lived most of her life in the hills she loved in Clover Township, two miles from her birthplace.

Aileen went to rural Clover School for eight years, pulling her runner sled behind her to sled down the many hills on her way to and from school.  She wore prized dresses sewn by her mother from pictures seen in the Sears Catalog.  Many of her blouses were from colorful, printed flour sacks.  She joked that she told her mother not to make her underwear from the sacks because she didn’t want to lean over and have it read, “Pillsbury’s Best.”

She was the youngest in her family for six years, until her niece and nephew, Valerie “BoBo” and Ronald Ballard, joined their family, followed by the birth of her youngest brother, Larry Thomas, and finally her nephew, Vell “Junior” Ballard.  She was especially close to her older brother, LuVerne, and often stayed with him until his hunting death in 1949.

Aileen knew her future husband Benny from a very young age.  He was the brother-in-law of her sister Mavis.  When she was just 11 years old, he drove her to and from the Bagley Hospital when she had appendicitis and poison oak.  Just a few years later, after Benny was drafted into the Army, he picked her up again in a black 1933 Terraplane and they eloped to Webster, South Dakota.  They were married on January 6, 1953.  After Benny’s discharge, they spent time caring for his ailing parents, and eventually purchased a farm outside of Clearbrook, Minnesota.  They moved several times until they settled permanently with their four children, Belinda, Sheila, Tina and Shane in Clover Township.

Aileen was a devoted homemaker and mother, as well as a gifted cook and hostess.  She was well-known for her thin and soft lefse.  After her youngest child reached the age of four, she began working at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook, Minnesota.  Later, she was a fourth-grade aide at Clearbrook School.  She then attended Bemidji Vocational Technical College to earn a secretarial degree.  For a time after this, she worked at Good Samaritan Center again, and then farmed with milk cows, pigs, and chickens.  She always loved children and cared for neighbors’ children and her own grandchildren.  She really enjoyed being a foster grandmother at the Clearbrook-Gonvick Public Schools in her retirement years.

During her lifetime, family and faith were always first and foremost.  She and Benny attended services at several different locations throughout the years, including Clover Chapel and even in their home for a time.  For the last several decades, they have been faithful members of First Baptist Church in Clearbrook.  Aileen served on the mission board as a deaconess and did jail ministry while at First Baptist.  Aileen liked to say she was baptized three times in her life: once as a newborn, once as an adult at Long Lake with Pastor Jim Howard, and once more as an infant when her dad drove into the river accidentally after a trip to town.  Her brother Jiggs pulled her out onto the roof, while her dad tried to save the sugar bag, but it dissolved right in his hands.  They had a great laugh over that at each retelling.

Reading and flower gardening were favorite pastimes for Aileen.  She started with vegetable gardening and canning but found her passion in her many abundant flower gardens.  She would never pick a favorite flower but often mentioned daisies and hydrangeas. Visitors often requested a tour of her beautiful gardens.

She is survived by Benny, her husband of 72 years of Leonard, daughter – Belinda (Mike) Lindell of Solway, daughter – Sheila (Dennis) Lee of Leonard, daughter – Tina (Alan) Witikko of Puposky, Minnesota, son – Shane (Laura) Erickson of Bagley, grandchildren – Robb Lindell, Jessica Meyer, Shalee Ostby, Benjamin Witikko, Alisa Witikko, Mandy Knable and Cole Erickson. Great grandchildren – Tyler, Matthew and Lily Lindell; Emalyn and Asher Meyer, Shaydyn and Brynlee Ostby, Ariel Knable, Sister (Niece) Valerie (BoBo) Ballard and Brother (Nephew) Vell “Junior” Ballard, Sister-in-law Leone Swanson and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Petra Swanson; grandson Brandon Lindell; great-grandson Andrew Lindell; siblings Mildred Ballard, Newell Swanson, LuVerne “Bucky” Swanson, Mavis Erickson, Ordean “Jiggs” Swanson, Jean Fuchs, Larry Thomas Swanson and (nephew) Ronald Ballard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Aileen wanted to acknowledge and thank everyone for their love through her long, health struggles these past years. She mentioned her thankfulness for all the visits, beautiful cards, well wishes, treats and phone calls, but especially for all the prayers. She said she had been greatly blessed in this life and looked forward to seeing you again in heaven. She wished blessings to you all and thanked you for being a part of her life.

October 1, 1936 ~ October 2, 2025

Lloyd Dale Knutson

Lloyd Dale Knutson was born on October 1, 1936, to Henry and Henrietta (Fillipi) Knutson in Warren, MN. He died on October 2, 2025, at the age of 89 and 1 day at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center after a long struggle with lung disease.

He began life on the “March” farm near Warren, MN moving early to a farm on Falk Lake near Leonard, MN, when he was 4 years old. He had many happy memories of that time, although it was during the depression era. He began his education at Birchmound Country School, in Sinclair Township. Walking the mile and a half partway with neighbor children and later his Shetland pony, Prince.

In 1945, the farm was sold at auction, and his father bought a blacksmith shop in Trail, MN where Lloyd attended school. While there he used his pony, Prince, to deliver papers, saving his money to buy a saddle for Prince. He and another boy loved to ride around with their ponies.

The opportunity came to buy a farm in Gully township, and they moved there in 1947. His dad bought a TD14 bulldozer and began bulldozing. Lloyd attended high school in Gonvick, MN, graduating in 1955. After graduating he was hired as a deck hand and sailed on the Great Lakes for Interlake Steamship Company on an ore carrier, for 3 seasons. He enjoyed the experience very much, and always fondly recalled his time there. He was able to buy a new 56 Chevrolet, purchased a bulldozer, going into business with his father, doing mostly land clearing and road building and was self-employed for 30 years.

Lloyd married Janet Hanson of the Berner area in 1959, and was blessed with two sons, Daniel and Dean. They lived for awhile in Gonvick before building a home on his parent’s farm. He tried several options to supplement their income including selling oil, road grading, and owning a dragline. In 1988 he quit bulldozing and took a job as a heavy-duty mechanic for a construction company, MN Ltd. They did pipeline work, taking him to many diverse places. He worked for several companies and after 11 years, retired to the farm in Gully.

In his life he was able to enjoy many of his interests: motorcycles, snowmobiling, four wheeling, fishing, game cameras and hunting to name a few. He enjoyed life and people, nature, dogs and music. He was a fan of Gordon Lightfoot and attended several of his concerts. Most of all, he loved his family.

Lloyd had a deep personal faith in God and Jesus Christ the sustained him all his life.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 67 years, Janet, and his sons, Daniel and Dean (Tresa) Knutson, grandchildren, Kayla Knutson, Steven, Veronica (Sam Birkholz) Alexander and Katherine Knutson. Two great-grandchildren, Adaline and Kassandra Birkholz. Niece, Kathy (Harvey) Bergholz, nephews, Kevin (Jeanne), Bradley, Robert (Hoan), and Kenneth (MaryJo) Hanson, two step nephews, Matthew (Kristi), Chistopher (Laura) Zeigle, several grand nieces and nephews. Aunt, Shirley Knutson, many cousins, sister-in-law Cheryl Ann Hanson and former sister-in-law, Lois Hanson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Henrietta Knutson, grandparents, brothers-in-law, Don (Marge) Hanson and Bob Hanson, step-nephew, Gregory Zeigle, two nieces, one grandniece, many aunts, uncles and cousins including his friend and cousin, Kenny Knutson.

He will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed.

His hands, though often calloused from work, were incredibly skilled and always ready to help. Whether he was meticulously crafting beautiful pieces through his woodworking or selflessly assisting friends and neighbors with emergency home and auto repairs, he approached every task with expertise and generosity. In his golden years, his greatest joy blossomed in the kitchen, where he delighted in baking countless batches of his famous cookies, sharing them generously with family and friends.

Dave’s quiet strength, boundless generosity, and steadfast love will be profoundly missed. Edna Mary was born on November 1, 1928, in Park River, ND the daughter of William “Bill” and Emma (Hodek) Zahratka.  The family moved to Bagley, MN in 1932.
