SUMMARY:Minnesota Lions Hearing Foundation - D-Feet Hearing Loss Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Lions Hearing Foundation\, First City Lions of Bemidji\, and the Bemidji Lions Club will hold this year’s D-Feet Hearing Loss Walk on Saturday\, June 6. This walk raises funds for the Lions’ partner University of Minnesota to be used for research\, services\, and outreach about hearing. \nRegistration is available at the Hearing Foundation’s website of 5mhf.org for $25\, with children under 12 free.  The walk is from Bemidji’s Diamond Point Park to the Paul Bunyan & Babe the Blue Ox statue and back\, about two miles.  The walk begins at 9:45 am with lunch included\, as well as children’s games and prizes\, and live music by the Empty Cooler Band.  Walkers can also register in person beginning at 8:30 am at Diamond Point Park. \nHearing impairment affects 1 in 10 people in the US from newborns to seniors hindering their speech\, learning\, and socialization.  Minnesota Lions have raised more than $7 Million to support research and programs that include Newborn Hearing Screening\, a Children’s Hearing and ENT Clinic\, Temporal Bone Lab\, Voice Clinic\, and an Affordable Hearing Aid Program.

SUMMARY:“The Great War” Sons of Norway Program
DESCRIPTION:Sons of Norway presents a program with speaker\, Dr. Caleb Curfman\, Thursday\, June 11\, meeting at 6:30 pm with program beginning at approximately 7:30 pm at the Embassy Center\, 603 3rd St NE\, Fosston. \nWhen Norwegian immigrants came to Minnesota in the 1850s and 1860s\, many hoped to build stable farming communities and new lives on the frontier. Instead\, some arrived at a moment of growing tension and uncertainty that would erupt into the US Dakota War of 1862. \nThis presentation explores the frontier experiences of Norwegian settlers during one of the most significant conflicts in Minnesota history. Through stories of settlement\, fear\, refugee flight\, frontier defense\, religion\, and memory\, the program examines how immigrant communities experienced the Dakota War and how the conflict shaped Minnesota’s development and identity. \nThe talk places Norwegian immigrant experiences within the broader history of frontier expansion\, Dakota dispossession\, and the challenges of life in nineteenth-century Minnesota. \nDr. Caleb Curfman teaches History at Northland Community and Technical College. His research focuses on 19th Century America\, specifically the era of the American Civil War and Native American history. His current manuscript project focuses on a social military history of the Dakota War of 1862\, arguing that the Civil War and Dakota War created the conditions for a refinement of identity for Minnesota citizen-soldiers on the frontier. \nAs usual\, meetings and programs are open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Fun Times in Gully Planned to Celebrate our Country’s Semiquincentennial / July 2-4
DESCRIPTION:Gully is planning to celebrate our country’s 250th year of independence in fun\, interesting ways.  The long weekend begins in Gully Thursday evening July 2\, with a Whist tournament starting at 6:30 at the Community Center. At noon on Friday\, July 3\, a number of children’s activities will begin\, from a Scavenger hunt\, chalk art\, and games to a Bouncy House. There will even be horse and wagon tours of Gully for all ages. Bingo enthusiasts may try a new twist with Music Bingo at Shorty’s from  2 – 4 pm. The host plays music and players look for the title on their cards. A free community meal is scheduled from 5-6:30 (July 3) at the Community Center.  Talented local musicians will entertain during the meal. Food will be served for the first 250 people. A new thing for Gully is “Local lore story-telling\, open mic”\, hosted by Ann Marie Newman. This will begin after the community meal.  Come share a story: “I remember when”\, “A funny thing happened” or “A lesson learned” may recall a story you can tell. Then stay for the Knowledge Bowl\, Trail vs Gully. With this friendly rivalry\, who will be this year’s champs? \nTop off Friday night with a street dance with the Donny Dahl Band.  Expect powerhouse vocals and high energy.  Bring a chair and enjoy the music. What better way to start the day on Saturday (July 4) than with a pancake and sausage breakfast at Lund Church. Breakfast will be served from 8 – 10 am. This will give just enough time to be ready for the big parade. The parade line-up begins at 9:00 am\, with starting time at 10:30 am. All types of entrants are welcome in the parade. After the parade the celebration moves to Trail for the rest of the weekend.  There\, a full range of activities are planned from Saturday afternoon through Sunday.  Fireworks will again be a feature for Trail beginning at dusk Saturday night.

DESCRIPTION:The Bagley American Legion Family\, Bagley Area Chamber\, Bagley Rotary and other community organizations are planning festivities on and around the Fourth of July in celebration of the United States of America’s 250th Birthday – a “Semiquincentennial” celebration! \nThis spring\, children will be able to participate in an essay contest\, writing about “What does America mean to me?” – information will be distributed through the local schools. \nOn Friday\, July 3 the American Legion will host a dinner and dance. \nOn Saturday\, July 4 preliminary plans include: \n\nA 5k run/walk\nGames for children\nLunch at the Bagley Legion (free) & announcement of essay contest winners.\nParade (hosted by the Bagley Rotary Club). Businesses\, organizations\, churches and individuals will be invited to participate in the parade. No entry fee. Prizes will be awarded by the Rotary Club.\nWaves Across America – a display of flags coordinated by the National American Legion\, with people waving a flag at the same time across America from the East coast to the West coast.\n\nOn Sunday\, July 5\, one of the community organizations will host a Community Breakfast (free will donation). \nWatch the News Bytes section in the coming months for details as they are confirmed.
